Neros Supports U.S. Army's Inaugural Best Drone Warfighter Competition

In February 2026, the inaugural U.S. Army Best Drone Warfighter Competition, sponsored by the Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA), brought together some of the Army’s most skilled unmanned aerial systems operators for a three-day test of speed, precision, tactical thinking, and innovation. Held in Huntsville, Alabama, the event marked an important milestone in the Army’s effort to rapidly expand its small-UAS capabilities and develop the next generation of drone warfighters. For Neros Technologies, participating in and supporting this event was both an honor and a reflection of our mission: helping allied forces build decisive technological advantage on the modern battlefield.
The Best Drone Warfighter Competition drew more than 200 competitors and hundreds of observers from across the Army, including active duty, National Guard, and Reserve units. Organized by the Army Aviation Center of Excellence and the Maneuver Center of Excellence in partnership with AAAA and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, the competition tested operators in three primary events: Best Drone Operator, Best Tactical Squad, and Best Innovation. Each event was designed to replicate real-world combat challenges, requiring participants to operate drones under pressure, coordinate with teammates, and demonstrate both technical proficiency and tactical judgment.
Neros was proud that our Archer FPV platform played a role in this groundbreaking competition. Soldiers piloted Archer drones through demanding obstacle courses and operational scenarios that mirrored the challenges drone operators face in contested environments. These events highlighted not only the importance of advanced drone technology but also the skill, creativity, and determination of the soldiers who operate it. For Neros, seeing our systems used by some of the Army’s best operators reinforced the purpose behind everything we build: empowering warfighters with tools that are fast, adaptable, and mission-ready.
The competition itself showcased how dramatically drones are reshaping modern warfare. Participants raced FPV drones through complex courses, executed simulated hunter-killer missions in small teams, and demonstrated new drone concepts designed to improve survivability and lethality on the battlefield. These exercises underscored the Army’s growing emphasis on integrating unmanned systems across formations and developing operators capable of thriving in technologically contested environments.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the event was the diversity of soldiers competing. Operators came from a wide range of military specialties, many of whom developed their drone expertise through personal initiative and passion for the technology. The inaugural Best Drone Operator title was ultimately awarded to Sgt. Javon Purchner of the 1st Cavalry Division, whose skill and dedication exemplified the spirit of innovation driving today’s drone revolution.
For Neros, the competition was about more than identifying a single champion. It represented a broader movement across the Army to recognize and cultivate the talent required to dominate the future battlespace. Events like this accelerate learning, foster collaboration between soldiers and industry, and help ensure that the United States and its allies maintain an edge in rapidly evolving drone warfare.
As unmanned systems continue to transform modern conflict, Neros remains committed to supporting the operators who will define the next era of military capability. We are proud to have played a role in the inaugural Best Drone Warfighter Competition and look forward to continuing our partnership with the U.S. Army and the Army aviation community to build the next generation of drone-enabled warfighters.
